The short answer

Exec Team Health is a free self-test for chief executives and senior leaders on how well their leadership team works together. Sixteen questions cover five dimensions of our own: trust, debate, decisions that stick, shared ownership and results. You get a team health score, a bar for each dimension and one move for each.

A question from The 42 Test that touches this topic.

What makes a leadership team work as a team?

What happens in the room, and what happens after it. An executive team that never argues in the room is arguing somewhere else. Healthy top teams admit mistakes to each other, disagree openly, leave with one decision, care about results outside their own function and own the company’s numbers together.

Take Exec Team Health: sixteen questions, about five minutes. Answer for the last quarter.

What does the test look at?

Five dimensions of our own, three or four questions each, in no particular order:

  • Trust. Whether team members rely on each other rather than going through you.
  • Debate. Whether disagreement happens in the meeting, not after it.
  • Decisions that stick. Whether decisions stay made, and everyone leaves with the same one.
  • Shared ownership. Whether members care about the company before their function.
  • Results. Whether the team tracks shared goals together.

What do I get at the end?

A team health score out of 100 and a bar for each dimension, weakest first, each with one move, such as having one person read back every decision before the meeting ends. The bands are “A healthy top team”, “Working, with weak spots” and “Struggling to work as a team”. The dimension names are our own and still a draft.

How is it worked out?

Each answer runs from 1 (never) to 5 (always). Six of the sixteen questions describe a healthy habit, such as “We disagree openly in our meetings”, and are flipped before scoring. Each dimension’s average sets its bar; the overall average becomes the score from 0 to 100.

The questions, dimensions, bands and advice are a draft written with AI and are waiting for a coach’s review. Treat the result as a mirror, not a verdict.

How do you assess executive team effectiveness?
Look at what happens in and after the leadership meeting: whether people admit mistakes, disagree in the room, leave with the same decision, care about each other’s results and track the company’s numbers together. The test scores those five, with a bar for each.
Is this based on Lencioni’s five dysfunctions?
No. Trust, debate, decisions that stick, shared ownership and results are our own working dimensions, unordered, written for this test and still a draft pending coach review. They aren’t taken from any published model.
How is the team health score worked out?
Each answer runs from 1 (never) to 5 (always). Six of the sixteen questions describe a healthy habit and are flipped. Each dimension’s average sets its bar; the overall average becomes the score from 0 to 100. It’s a reflection, not a verdict.
